Metrology of the Abstract
Metrology of the Abstract DictionaryMoA Dictionary is a continuously calibrated dictionary: metrological discipline — standards, traceability, uncertainty, continuous correction — applied to words and definitions as conceptual instruments. What This IsWe are not a brand, and we are not “just a website.” We are a metrology system — standards, procedures, calibration records, and instruments — aimed at one primary field of measurement: how well a definition (and its mechanism) measures the domain it claims to serve. This is not the same claim as being incomplete. “Incomplete” implies a fixed, known endpoint that has not been reached yet — a finished product waiting to exist. That is not what this is. A metrology has no such endpoint by design: the calibration cycle keeps running as long as language, usage, and institutions keep changing. A calibration cycle checking an entry is not the same as that entry requiring rewrite. An instrument can pass diagnostics and need no edit — that is a good outcome. The cycle exists to confirm accuracy on a real schedule, not to presume every word is broken. “Never done” describes the checking, not endless rewriting for its own sake. What we actually are, at any given moment, is in development and at a specific point in a calibration cycle — a real, stated, checkable position (seed, sketch, provisional standard, higher standing when earned). Every entry and procedure should declare that position honestly. That declaration is part of the discipline, not an admission of failure. A brand finishes a product and ships it. A metrology calibrates an instrument and keeps checking it. The first treats “done” as the goal. The second treats “currently accurate, checked recently, standing declared, residual uncertainty visible” as the goal — ongoing, and answerable to reality whether or not that answer requires a change. What We Measure
We publish calibrated entries and the path (sketches, reports, recommendations). Polished conclusions without a trail are weaker instruments. What We Are Not
We measure, document, report, and recommend. Domain authorities decide what to adopt. Relationship to MoA and The Sovereign GamesMetrology of the Abstract (MoA) is the underlying discipline: metrology applied to abstract systems. This dictionary is a primary implementation and proving ground of MoA — where independent calibrators can run terms, publish records, challenge mechanisms, and earn standing through survived work. The Sovereign Games is a related sandbox where MoA-style discipline is exercised on human-system patterns (diagnostics, builders, governance). TSG is not this dictionary, and this dictionary is not a rebrand of TSG. Shared method; different measurement field.
Serious contributors welcome. Re-runs, counterexamples, and careful correction beat passive agreement. If something is unclear or wrong, that is data — not a scandal. Independent MoA work is expected: demonstrate skill on the instruments, not on the brand. To contribute, discuss on individual pages or become a Contributor. |
The World's First Continuously Calibrated Dictionary
Not every definition is equally calibrated.
The Metrology of the Abstract (MoA) applies the principles of metrology—the science of measurement—to concepts, definitions, mechanisms, and abstract systems.
Instead of asking:
- "What does this word mean?"
We ask:
- "How accurately does this definition represent reality, preserve intent, reduce ambiguity, and predict observable consequences?"

Why This Exists
Language shapes decisions.
Decisions shape outcomes.
When definitions drift, misunderstandings multiply.
Small conceptual errors become large societal consequences.
The Metrology of the Abstract exists to continuously calibrate the conceptual tools humans use every day.
Our objective is not to create another opinion.
Our objective is to reduce uncertainty.
Every Definition Is Measured
Every calibrated definition consists of two complementary parts:
- The Abstract — What the concept means.
- The Mechanism — How the concept is correctly evaluated and applied.
Each calibrated definition undergoes a structured evaluation using transparent calibration standards.
Every concept is calibrated along two independent dimensions.
| Calibration Dimension | Purpose | Measures | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Definition (Abstract) | Calibrate how accurately the concept measures reality. |
|
A calibrated conceptual definition. |
| Definition Mechanism | Calibrate how the concept is correctly understood, evaluated, and applied. |
|
A calibrated application procedure. |
Together these produce a complete conceptual calibration.
Note:
- Not a failure mode: Adversarial application, public challenge, independent re-run, using the tool on contested political/moral vocabulary when Quality Gate, standing, and residual uncertainty are explicit.
- Is a failure mode: Same actions without documentation, with standing inflation, or with “settled meaning” claims.
Every Calibrated Entry Includes
Every published calibration contains:
- ✓ Calibrated Definition
- ✓ Original Intent
- ✓ Observable Characteristics
- ✓ Failure Modes
- ✓ Common Misapplications
- ✓ Long-Term Consequences
- ✓ Calibration History
- ✓ Revision Log
- ✓ Traceability to Evidence
- ✓ Calibration Uncertainty
- ✓ Confidence Level
- ✓ Declared Standing & Confidence Level
No definition is considered permanently complete.
Every definition remains in continuous calibration.
Hard use under declared method and standing is the intended operating environment; soft use that never risks a floor is the incomplete run.
Results
A calibrated word becomes more than a definition.
It becomes a calibrated conceptual instrument. A calibrated word is:
- A tool for understanding an abstract concept
- A tool for evaluating an abstract concept
- A tool for correctly applying an abstract concept
- A tool calibrated to reality
- A tool used to calibrate our understanding of reality
- A traceable reference for human reasoning
- A traceable reference for machine reasoning
Words are not merely labels. Properly calibrated, they become instruments for reducing conceptual uncertainty.

More Than Definitions
Concepts do not exist in isolation.
Each entry also identifies:
- Related concepts
- Parent mechanisms
- Child mechanisms
- Opposing concepts
- Supporting concepts
- System interactions
- Common misunderstandings
- Cascading effects
Understanding a concept means understanding the system it participates in.
Calibration Reports
The Metrology of the Abstract publishes independent calibration reports on definitions found in publicly available dictionaries and reference sources.
We do not replace those sources. We measure them.
These reports apply transparent calibration standards to existing definitions and return a structured evaluation of how well they currently perform as conceptual instruments.
Example sources under evaluation include:
- Merriam-Webster
- Oxford English Dictionary / Lexico
- Cambridge Dictionary
- Dictionary.com
- Wiktionary
- Wikipedia (lead definitions and concept pages)
- Specialized academic and legal glossaries
- Institutional and policy glossaries
Every calibration report includes:
- Standards Used
- Evidence Examined
- Calibration Observations
- Identified Drift
- Missing Components
- Failure Modes
- Predicted Consequences
- Calibration Recommendations
The objective is continuous improvement — not condemnation. Every report remains open to evidence-based revision.
When a public definition is found to contain ambiguity, standing inflation, or structural weakness, the report documents the findings and offers concrete recommendations for raising its calibration quality.
We also publish our own calibrated definitions.
These entries are held to exactly the same standards, the same standing rules, and the same continuous recalibration requirements as any external source we evaluate. No special exemption applies.
Human and Machine Readable
Every calibrated definition is designed for both humans and computers.
This enables:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Knowledge Graphs
- Semantic Search
- Expert Systems
- Education
- Research
- Organizational Governance
- Software Development
- Autonomous Agents
One calibrated definition should be usable by a person, an AI model, or a future reasoning engine without changing its meaning.

We Are Not A Wiki Per Se
We use MediaWiki. That is a fact.
What we are not is a traditional wiki project whose success is measured by encyclopedia norms: complete coverage, no red links, polished consumer reference, or “finished product” shipping.
| Traditional wiki scoreboard | This system’s scoreboard |
|---|---|
| Fill every link; look complete | Declare stage; leave Calibration Debt visible when known |
| Article completeness as quality | Instrument fitness: purpose, mechanism, boundaries, standing, trail |
| Platform polish = seriousness | Calibration cycle = seriousness (including “checked, no change needed”) |
| The wiki is the product | The wiki is a workbench for metrology; the discipline is the point |
We are developing — pages, procedures, and infrastructure move through real stages. We reject only the frame that treats early or partial instruments as failure relative to a fixed finished-wiki endpoint.
A red link here is usually a breadcrumb: something identified, not yet built, not hidden. A red link that breaks a path already claimed as ready is operational debt and should be fixed or the claim lowered — that is still metrology, not encyclopedia shame.
MediaWiki, templates, and extensions are calibration infrastructure. Judge them by whether they support traceability, honest status, and public challenge. Do not judge the project by whether it looks like a completed reference wiki. It was never aimed at that scoreboard.
