How We Calibrate Words

Two layers. Same family. Different jobs.

Natural-language definitions are treated as instruments, not slogans. They are calibrated in two complementary stages:

  1. Seed Compiler — makes the term's internal mechanism explicit and machine-checkable.
  2. Abstract Definition Mechanics (ADM) — calibrates that mechanism as a map of a domain (fit, gaps, neighbors, standing, and reality alignment).

Together these form the foundation of the Metrology of the Abstract—combining compiler discipline with metrology to produce inspectable, reusable abstract instruments.

Seed Compiler makes the definition's mechanism explicit.

ADM calibrates how well that mechanism performs its stated job as a map of reality.


1. Seed Compiler — Definitions → Machine-Checkable Mechanisms

What it is

A structured procedure (TDP-style / Seed Compiler) that converts a natural-language definition into an explicit logical structure by calibrating the internal mechanism of the term.

The result is a machine-readable intermediate representation (IR) that can, in principle, be exported into executable or code-like forms.

What it does

  • Locks the dated definition text
  • Checks atomicity versus composite ("bundle") terms
  • Decomposes load-bearing components:
    • Includes
    • Excludes
    • Conditions
    • Agents
    • Objects
  • Builds a procedural/logical model describing how the definition is intended to classify or operate
  • Identifies:
    • gaps
    • counterexamples
    • operational floors
  • Produces a structured Intermediate Representation (IR)

What "calibration" means here

Not:

"Is this ideology true?"

Instead:

"Is this definition internally coherent and operational enough to function as a checkable instrument?"

Limit

The Seed Compiler exposes the definition's machinery.

It does not determine how well that mechanism corresponds to the external domain it intends to describe.


2. Abstract Definition Mechanics (ADM) — Definitions as Reality Maps

What it is

Abstract Definition Mechanics (ADM) calibrates a definition as a reality-mapping instrument.

Rather than asking only:

"What does this definition say?"

ADM asks:

"How well does this instrument perform the job it claims to perform?"

The focus shifts from language to operational mapping.

3. Deep Dive — Reality Alignment Mapping

A standard calibration produces:

A Deep Dive produces something much richer.

Instead of documenting only the calibration event, it creates a reusable performance map describing how the instrument behaves.

Reality Alignment Map

The Deep Dive records:

  • Where the instrument aligns with reality
  • Where it reliably performs its stated job
  • Known boundaries
  • Operational uncertainty
  • Material omissions
  • Neighboring instruments
  • Exceptions
  • Areas where the instrument should not be applied

Rather than forcing future operators to repeatedly interpret the same prose, the calibrated performance map becomes a reusable operational reference.

Anchor Graph

Multiple calibrated instruments become connected through typed relationships.

Core Principle

Abstracts are instruments.

Abstract instruments must themselves be calibrated before they can reliably calibrate other abstract instruments.

This is the central principle of the Metrology of the Abstract.

Every calibrated abstract instrument becomes part of a growing traceability chain used to measure, evaluate, construct, and calibrate future abstract instruments.
