Seed to Fruit Development
Seed to Fruit is the general calibration development process for conceptual instruments within the Metrology of the Abstract (MoA).
It describes how a conceptual instrument evolves through successive calibration while preserving complete traceability of its development.
Purpose
[edit]Provide a transparent, evidence-driven framework for developing conceptual instruments from their earliest documented form through increasing calibration maturity.
Rather than hiding development until an instrument appears “finished,” Seed to Fruit makes the calibration path visible, traceable, and open to improvement.
The objective is not perfection. The objective is calibrated transparency.
Relationship to Maturity Levels

The implementing metrology’s maturity scale (in this project: instrument_grade / Versioning) describes current calibration maturity.
These are complementary:

Seed to Fruit is the process. Maturity Level is the measurement.
This procedure does not prescribe a universal list of intermediate botanical stages or a single global grade ladder. Progression evidence and grade labels are defined by the implementing metrology so different abstract domains can adopt the process without importing another project’s taxonomy.
Scope
[edit]Applies to every conceptual instrument calibrated under MoA, including definitions, standards, calibration procedures, diagnostic frameworks, governance documents, policies, reference materials, ontologies, tools, measurement frameworks, educational resources, and related instruments.
Seed Stage
[edit]A conceptual instrument may begin with only the calibration information currently supported by available evidence (preliminary definition, initial mechanism, scope, calibration question, dependency map, first Calibration Report, draft procedure, or other honest starting point).
Beginning at Seed is intentional: it establishes a traceable starting point.
What Seed Stage Does NOT Mean
[edit]A Seed-stage instrument is:
- Not invalid or “not real” because it is early
- Not evidence of poor quality or poor credibility by stage alone
- Not unfinished work presented as finished
- Not a free pass on nonconformance logging, missing required preconditions, or inflated standing
Seed is a valid stated maturity calibrated to present evidence. It remains fully subject to the same discipline as later grades: log defects, refuse false Confirmed claims, and recalibrate when evidence changes.
Development Through Calibration
[edit]As evidence, testing, analysis, application, and formal calibration activities accumulate, the instrument matures. Activities may include Calibration Reports, findings, recommendations, Nonconformance Reports, Decision Records, dependency analysis, mechanism refinement, validation, independent review, and related documented work.
Each event should contribute to measurable maturity without erasing history.
Evidence-Driven Progression
[edit]Advancement in maturity occurs only when documented calibration evidence justifies the transition under the implementing metrology’s rules.
Determined by evidence, repeatability, traceability, validation, and calibration quality — not by elapsed time, popularity, age, page length, contributor count, visual completeness, or unsupported opinion.
In this project, operational grade markers and promotion rules are implemented via Versioning, Admin Page Status, Calibration Reports, and related standing rules — not by a second parallel ladder on this page.
Stagnation, Merge, Retirement, and Downgrade
[edit]Seed to Fruit is not a one-way growth story. Metrology also requires:
- Stagnation under check — an instrument may remain at a grade for a long time while still being actively reviewed on schedule
- Merge — overlapping instruments may be combined when evidence shows duplication without added resolution
- Retirement — instruments that no longer earn their keep are withdrawn from active use, with history retained
- Downgrade — when new evidence shows prior maturity claims were too high, grade and standing are reduced and logged
Passing a calibration check with no edit is a legitimate outcome. The cycle exists to confirm alignment with reality on a real schedule, not to presume every instrument is broken.
Calibration History
[edit]Every material calibration activity should remain permanently traceable (revision history, Calibration Reports, Decision Records, Talk/logs, version history, dependency records, calibration logs, or equivalent).
The history is part of the instrument. Nothing required for audit is discarded to create a false appearance of completion.
Continuous Calibration
[edit]Conceptual instruments are expected to evolve as evidence, dependencies, related instruments, uncertainty, and methods change. Continual improvement and historical traceability are joint requirements.
Incomplete vs In Cycle
[edit]Incomplete implies a fixed, known finished product that has not been reached yet.
MoA does not treat that as the governing metaphor. A metrology has no final shipped product endpoint by design: checking continues as long as what is measured exists and can drift.
In development / in cycle means a real, stated, checkable position in an ongoing calibration discipline — not an excuse and not a placeholder. An instrument can be checked indefinitely and corrected rarely (or never) and still be a properly calibrated instrument.
Guiding Principle
[edit]A seed is not a failed fruit. A Seed-stage conceptual instrument is not a failed instrument. It is an instrument accurately calibrated to its current stage. As evidence accumulates, alignment can improve; identity and history remain continuous.
